Green Day for Year 1, Tanglin Trust School – 7 Nov 2008

Approximately 180-200 children in 8 batches walked over from the school premises nearby (on Portsdown Rd) to the Green Dots premises, 10min away.

The sprawling outdoor garden at Green Dots has over 60 species of plants, including a gigantic 70 year old rain tree, several coconut tress, a jackfruit tree, a mango tree, a traveller’s palm, a Shorea …and many, many more !

Over a 20-30min interactive “talk as we walk” session the lil, little green dots

  1. Were greeted by Wilbur the owl (made from recycled scrap metal by African natives)
  2. Said Hello to Wilbur’s 3 birdie friends, with their natural, copper tone (also from recycled metal), viz: Rusty, Rusky & Ronny
  3. Soaked in nature at its best and took in a Botanic Garden type experience
  4. Followed a marigold trail and learned queer and interesting facts about common Singapore plants
  5. Got fascinated with how the seeds of kitchen vegetables could reincarnated as ne pumpkin, tomato, bell pepper, chilli and papaya plants
  6. Made kinetic energy by blowing away at wind mills
  7. Opened up a solar lamp and saw how the photovoltaic cell captured the sun’s rays and stored the energy in the battery inside, while turning on the LED light automatically !
  8. Generously contributed their organic garbage i.e. fruit and vegetable peels, to the compost pit, to make fertile food for the garden

They were green with joy at the end of it all…also red and well dosed with Vitamin D !

With their fresh and fertile minds…and having absorbed the makings of a green lifestyle experientially…they will embrace their futures with greener consciences for sure !

They will be able to recognize and recapitulate stories of many of Singapore’s tropical plants in effortlessly in their immediate sorroundings, while being able to pass on many a memorable tale…
